Kentucky Teacher License Renewal & Professional Development Requirements

Kentucky teachers utilize Model Teaching courses every year to earn academic credits for license renewal or salary advancement. All Model Teaching university-partnered courses provide graduate-level semester credit for license renewal or salary advancement purposes. You may choose any Model Teaching university-partnered courses of interest or enroll in one of our Course Bundle Packs – the most cost-effective way to earn credits.

  • Regionally-Accredited Semester Credits

Model Teaching offers great options to earn semester credits from accredited universities in order to renew or maintain their teaching certification or advance salary scale.

Kentucky teachers have several options for their continuing education needs. After receiving a 5-year teaching certificate, teachers must verify that they have at least three years of full time teaching experience within the past 5 years and show completion of 15 graduate hours OR fulfill half of the CEO (Continuing Education Option) requirements (See Read More, below for more information).

Model Teaching offers courses provided through regionally-accredited universities. These Academic Credit University-Partnered Courses may be acceptable for Kentucky teacher license renewal and Professional Development requirement hours according to The Kentucky Department of Education. All courses completed through our academic partners will include access to an official transcript from that academic institution for submission to any license-granting authority.

Continuing Education Option (CEO)
The CEO requires candidates to submit an independent professional growth plan based on their needs. This includes classes, professional development, and other PD activities. These opportunities may include online professional development courses such as Model Teaching courses.

While we always recommend you confirm your state or district’s license renewal requirements, we recommend choosing any of our regionally-accredited university partnered courses or course bundle packs.  These courses are in partnership with regionally-accredited universities and include an official transcript.

Teaching Certification Renewal (Source: Kentucky Department of Education)

Once you receive your Kentucky teaching certificate, it is valid for five years. For your first renewal, you must:

  • Complete Section I of the Application for Certificate Renewal/Duplicate
  • Have your school superintendent complete Section II of the application, verifying that you have at least three years of full-time teaching experience within the past five years (or 6 semester hours of college credit – if selecting this option, have the college verify this)
  • Submit application renewal fee via check or money order payable to the Kentucky State Treasurer
  • Show completion of 15 graduate hours or fulfill half of the CEO (Continuing Education Option) requirements

For the second five-year renewal of your teaching certificate, you must:

  • Complete Section I of the Application for Certificate Renewal/Duplicate
  • Have your school superintendent complete Section II of the application, verifying that you have at least three years of full-time teaching experience within the past five years (or 6 semester hours of college credit – if selecting this option, have the college verify this)
  • Complete an approved master’s degree program (32 graduate hours) or complete the CEO requirements
  • Submit application renewal fee via check or money order payable to the Kentucky State Treasurer

For subsequent five-year renewals of your teaching certificate, you must:

  • Complete Section I of the Application for Certificate Renewal/Duplicate
  • Have your school superintendent complete Section II of the application, verifying that you have at least three years of full-time teaching experience within the past five years (or 6 semester hours of college credit – if selecting this option, have the college verify this)
  • Submit application renewal fee via check or money order payable to the Kentucky State Treasurer

Continuing Education Option (CEO)
Kentucky’s state legislators and educators developed the Continuing Education Option (CEO) for rank change and certificate renewal as an alternative to a planned fifth-year program college course of studies. The initiative, that resulted from the 1996 General Assembly House Bill 305, is structured to link teachers’ professional growth with positive, measurable improvement in student learning. Built around the Kentucky Teacher Standards adopted by the Education Professional Standards Board (EPSB), the CEO requires candidates to submit an independent professional growth plan based on the needs of the teacher, the students, and the school. The professional growth plan is a unique independent study that includes graduate-level classes, professional development experiences, research, reading, and shadowing other professionals.

Candidates create job-embedded CEO Plans based on the needs of their schools, districts, and communities. Each candidate is required to create a portfolio representing successful completion of his or her plan. Although the CEO is an independent study, throughout the process candidates receive support through online resources and by participating in face-to-face regional monthly cohort meetings offered across the state. Cohorts are supported by experienced educational professionals (coaches) in a blended learning environment integrating traditional learning with technology to provide a technology-enhanced independent learning experience.

The benefits of successful completion of the CEO program are far-reaching. The teacher candidate completes a self-assessment to identify his or her own areas for growth and matches them to specific local district and classroom needs. The structures of the CEO Plan and CEO Portfolio are based on candidates’ professional needs, goals, objectives, and activities. To address the full scope of the Kentucky Teacher Standards, some of these professional needs, goals, objectives, and activities are teacher-centered, some are student-centered, and some focus on leadership. As a result, each completed CEO program will bring new resources and experiences into the candidate’s classroom, school and district.
