Nebraska educator certification runs through the Nebraska Department of Education (NDE). A Standard Teaching Certificate lasts 5 years and expires on 30 September in the fifth year after it was issued. Renewing it takes one of two things for most teachers: 1 year of teaching at 50% time or more during the past 5 years, or 6 graduate semester hours in education or your content area. Applications and renewals run through the TEACH system, the Educator and Certification Hub.
The two standard renewal routes
A Standard Teaching Certificate renews on either one. You do not need both.
1 year of teaching at 50% or more within the past 5 years, in a legally operated school system, while holding or qualifying to hold a regular teaching certificate. NDE also describes this as 0.5 FTE years of experience in the last 5 years. Substitute teaching does not count.
Completed within the past 5 years, in education or your content area, from a 4-year standard institution of higher education, while holding or qualified to hold a certificate that has not expired or has been expired less than 5 years.

What counts toward a Nebraska renewal
Nebraska counts renewal in graduate semester hours. There is no clock-hour, CEU or point conversion for teacher certificate renewal.
- Graduate-level semester credits. 6 graduate semester hours renews a Standard Teaching Certificate on the coursework route. The credit has to be graduate level, in education or your content area, from a 4-year standard institution of higher education, and earned within the past 5 years. (Recommended, and the route we offer.)
- Recent teaching experience. 1 year at 50% or more in the past 5 years renews the certificate with no coursework. If this applies to you, you do not need to buy anything for renewal. Substitute teaching does not count.
- Coursework toward a master’s. Graduate credits also build toward a master’s degree, which can carry a longer certificate and usually moves you on your district’s salary schedule.
Nebraska does not maintain an approved provider list for certificate renewal coursework. What matters is that the credit is graduate level, in education or your content area, and from a 4-year standard institution of higher education. The credential most working teachers hold is the Standard Teaching Certificate, which lasts 5 years and expires on 30 September in the fifth year following issuance.
Nebraska certificate renewal takes one of two things for most teachers. The first is recent teaching experience: 1 year of teaching at 50% time or more within the past 5 years, in a legally operated school system, while holding or qualifying to hold a regular teaching certificate. NDE also expresses this as 0.5 FTE years of experience in the last 5 years, and it is a low enough bar that most teachers working in a Nebraska classroom clear it without doing anything extra. Substitute teaching does not count toward it. The second route is 6 graduate semester hours in education or your content area, completed within the past 5 years, from a 4-year standard institution of higher education.
That second route is the one that matters if you have been away from the classroom. Teachers returning from a career break, people who moved into instructional coaching or administration or a role outside schools, and those working part time below the half-time threshold all renew on coursework rather than experience. There is no state approval step and no provider list for it. What Nebraska asks is that the credit is graduate level, that it is in education or your content area, that it comes from a 4-year standard institution of higher education, and that you earned it within the past 5 years.
A third path exists and it is worth naming so nobody buys the wrong thing. If your certificate has been expired for more than 5 years, Nebraska requires 15 specific graduate semester hours rather than 6. Those hours must include a course in instructional techniques, coursework addressing current issues in education such as special education, gifted education, reading and writing in the content area and school law, and a practicum of 100 or more clock hours of contact with students in a classroom, half of which is teaching under a cooperating teacher. The coursework has to be recommended for certificate issuance by the certification officer of an approved teacher education institution. That is a supervised, in-person requirement, and no online course provider can meet it.
Nebraska also issues a Professional Teaching Certificate, which runs 10 years rather than 5. It requires a master’s degree completed within the last 10 years in Curriculum & Instruction, Educational Technology, or the applicant’s content area, plus holding or qualifying for a Standard Teaching Certificate. NDE notes that a master’s degree which led to a first initial teaching certificate will not advance an educator to a Professional certificate. Whether a specific degree satisfies the named-field requirement is a question for NDE, and any teacher pursuing a master’s for this reason should confirm it before enrolling.

A master’s degree doubles your certificate to 10 years
Nebraska issues a Professional Teaching Certificate that runs 10 years instead of 5. It is the same teaching authority, valid in all Nebraska school systems, on a renewal cycle twice as long. Few states offer anything like it, and it is worth knowing about before you plan a degree.
A master’s degree completed within the last 10 years in one of three areas: Curriculum & Instruction, Educational Technology, or a master’s in your content area. You also need to hold or qualify for a Standard Teaching Certificate, and submit official transcripts showing the qualifying degree.
If your master’s degree led to your first initial teaching certificate, it will not advance you to a Professional Teaching Certificate. A degree already spent on becoming certified cannot be reused here.

Whether any particular master’s satisfies Nebraska’s named-field requirement is NDE’s decision, not ours, and we are not going to tell you it does. The Augustana M.Ed. uses a learner-designed concentration rather than a named Curriculum & Instruction or Educational Technology track.
