Rhode Island Teacher License Renewal & Professional Development Requirements
Rhode Island teachers utilize Model Teaching courses every year to earn professional development clock hours and academic credits for their career advancement needs. All Model Teaching university-partnered courses provide graduate-level semester credit for license renewal or salary advancement purposes. Choose any Model Teaching professional development or university-partnered courses of interest or enroll in one of our Course Bundle Packs – the most cost-effective way to earn your required clock hours or credits.
Rhode Island offers a three-tiered certification process. Teachers first must earn an Initial Educator Certificate, which is valid for 3 years. If the teacher has received successful evaluations through the Local Educator Evaluation system, completed the requisite professional development (if required), they will receive their 5-year Professional Educator Certificate.
Professional Educator Certificate
If an educator has taught for 5 years and received 5 ratings of “Effective” through the Local Educator Evaluation system they may renew their 5 year Professional Educator Certificate. If the educator has received 5 ratings of “highly effective” through the Local Educator Evaluation System, they may renew their Professional Educator Certificate as an Advanced Educator Certificate for 7 years.
Advanced Educator Certificates may be renewed every 7 years with “Highly Effective” ratings as described above.
